How Do I Transfer My Safelink Account to Another Carrier?

SafeLink is a free government cell phone service which is offered to impoverished citizens. The more destitute a family is, the more minutes they receive from Safelink.

You do need to be eligible to qualify for the Safelink cell phone program. To get a Safelink cell phone you have to be a member of the LifeLine program.

Most people who gain more income are usually released from theLifeline program and hence they are not eligible for the Safelink service. You may also decide to leave the service yourself if you start earning a higher income. However, you can port the account so that you retain your number.

You also need to be eligible to transfer your SafeLink account to a new carrier. Safelink users need to log on to the Safelink website and fill the transfer enrollment forms then submit it. The forms will be transferred to the administrators and SafeLink and the primary name on the plan will be notified if a transfer is possible or not.

To transfer your Safelink account, your number needs to be active in their system. Therefore, you should not deactivate your number before the transfer process is finalized.

During the porting process, you can also not receive calls to your number. However, you will be able to make outgoing calls.

All your credit balance is deactivated once you transfer your account to another carrier. Safelink is a prepaid service so if your account is not recharged it will automatically be deactivated.

The simplest way to way to transfer your Safelink account to another is to call customer service and ask them to do it for you. You will have to submit certain information to your new carrier so that they can process the transfer.

All the information associated it your Safelink account will be required to transfer your number to a new carrier. Such information will include you first and last name, your address, your secondary phone number and your social security number. Since there are no billings with Safelink, you will not be asked to provide a previous bill to a certain your identity and account information.

The first step is to call the new carrier and ask them if an account transfer from Safelink is possible. If not, you will need a new number. If it is, you should then call Safelink customer service and then the you want to transfer your account.

Since it is a benefit program and not a commercial service plan, you will not deal with persuasion from the customer service agent to remain on their service. Ask them for all the information associated with your account.

After the agent confirms that your account transfer is complete, you should then call you new carrier again to complete the transfer on their end. The two providers should have been in contact during this time and the transfer process already complete or close to completion after 24 hours. After two business days you should call again if the process is not complete.

A call to Safelink after a few days is also recommended just to confirm your account is cancelled. This will help avoid your number being used by malevolent parties.

Because Safelink is a prepaid service you do not have to worry about suspicious charges on your credit card as is the case with post paid services. You can request your Safelink balance to be transferred to another Safelink number if you have a loved on on the same program.
